For a man, nothing can be more embarrassing than having breasts. But this can happen and does happen to lot of men. Medically termed “gynecomastia”, a term that originates from the Greek words “gyne” meaning female and “mastia” meaning breast, is nothing but a combination of breast tissue and fat accumulation. Both can be removed entirely by a keyhole surgery — “power liposuction”, which is done as a day care procedure without hospitalization. The scars are minimal and fade away with time. So, going to a swimming pool or baring the chest need not be scary anymore.
An imbalance of testosterone and oestrogen hormones is often the cause of gynecomastia. Male breast tissue can swell and get larger as a result of some drugs and disorders. Breast enlargement in boys and men usually improves without treatment. If you're self-conscious about your breast size, you might want to explore breast reduction surgery.
The surgery is carried out through two pinhole incisions on the sides of the chest with the help of power-assisted liposuction technique. The excess fat and breast tissue is sucked out and after the surgery the patient is made to wear a pressure garment for a period of four weeks. Sometimes excessive glandular tissue and skin may be present which may need additional procedures. The Glandular tissue is taken out through an incision in the areola, care is taken to leave some tissue behind the areola so as to prevent a scooped out appearance( saucer deformity). Excess skin usually seen after massive weight loss can be addressed by a variety of techniques. This surgery at our center is done through inconspicuous scars and a perfectly sculpted chest.
Results are permanent, although subsequent obesity can create a gynecomastia-like effect. Some of the benefits of surgery include a firmer, flatter, more contoured chest which may give the male patient a boost in self-confidence. There is little downtime, and you may return to work within one week usually, unless you are involved in strenuous activities. Full physical activity is usually allowed 6 weeks after surgery.
