As one ages, gravity has its effect on the breasts tissue. The skin loses elasticity, and with other factors such as pregnancy, breast-feeding and weight loss, ultimately the shape and firmness of breasts is lost. Changes to the breasts can be dissatisfying and make women feel as if they are losing some of their femininity and youthful vitality. If the breasts have increased in size then the patients can undergo breast reduction surgery.
However, those satisfied with the size are treated with a breast lift to raise the breast and make it firm thereby giving a youthful shape. If there is reduction in volume, due to loss of breast substance, then one can opt for an implant in addition to breast lift surgery, thereby not only firming and lifting up the breast, but making it larger or fuller as well. It is important to know that for women getting pregnant after undergoing a breast lift, the effects of pregnancy and breast feeding may alter the results, and cause the breasts to sag and change shape. Although a breast lift cannot stop the ageing process, it can however not only improve the position of the breasts, but restore a fuller and shapely appearance that one desires.
During a breast lift procedure, loose and excess skin is removed, and the remaining is tightened. As a result, the overall shape of the breasts is improved, and they are lifted to a new, more upright position.
A patient may require a simultaneous augmentation to restore the volume loss in the breast (augmentation mastopexy). The four basic breast lift techniques are known as the periareolar, circumareolar, vertical and anchor techniques. They are used to correct increasing grades of ptosis in that order. The scars may be hidden around the areola, and in the inframammary fold. In addition, there may be a vertical scar connecting the areola to the inframammary fold.
