The most important aspect for an aesthetically appearing face is the nose. Therefore, many have a strong desire to improve the shape and/or size of the nose through rhinoplasty or a “nose job”. While most of these procedures are performed for cosmetic reasons, rhinoplasty can also be used as a solution to rectify structural defects that may cause breathing problems.
The most important thing to understand before undergoing a rhinoplasty is that one should have specific, but realistic goals in mind.
Rhinoplasty is not a procedure with a set series of steps. Each operation is unique and is customized for the specific anatomy and goals of the person undergoing the procedure. It is very important that you verbalize your concerns to the treating surgeon. You and your surgeon should be on the same page with regards to what can be achieved from the surgery.
Rhinoplasty may be done from inside your nose or through a small external incision at the base of your nose, between your nostrils. Your surgeon will likely readjust the bone and cartilage underneath your skin. He may augment your nasal bone or cartilage in several ways, depending on how much needs to be added, the structure of your nose and available materials. For small changes, we usually use cartilage harvested from deeper inside your nose (septum) or from your ear. For larger requirements, we can use cartilage from your rib, implants or bone from other parts of your body. Requisite implants if indicated are placed and septal deviation if any is corrected. Wide nose is also corrected with a cut at the base of the nostril. If changes are made only to the outside of the nose, then there is no nasal packing. If any correction is needed to improve nasal breathing that requires straightening the septum, then small nasal packs may be placed inside each nostril, which is usually removed after two days.
Some swelling and bruising around the eyes is quite normal that typically begins to disappear within a few days of the procedure. Resting with the head elevated helps speed up the recovery process and reduce swelling. After a week's time the nasal splint, if used, is removed. The patient is not allowed to sleep on the sides or on the tummy and contact sports are to be avoided for six weeks.
Since rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure it comes with its own set of risks. There is possibility of bleeding, infection and reactions to medication or anaesthesia. In addition, risks include burst blood vessels that can lead to red spots and small scars on the underside of the nose as well as surgeon induced deformities such as a "pinched nose" and asymmetries. In some cases, revision rhinoplasty may have to be performed. Choosing a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon will reduce the risks involved.
